A dental emergency is scary, so knowing where to turn is necessary when the unexpected happens. The dental team at Palms Dental is experienced in treating dental emergencies; our goal is to alleviate your pain and then try to save your teeth. So, what do you need to know if you have suffered an injury and broken one or more of your teeth?

What to Do if You Break a Tooth

If you sustain an injury to your face or mouth, you can easily chip or break a tooth. Something as simple as biting down on a hard object can break your tooth as well. However it happens, you need to know what to do. Follow these steps if you break one or more of your teeth:

Rinse Your Mouth

You want to keep your mouth as clean as possible after breaking a tooth, so immediately rinse your mouth to remove any blood or dirt. Rinsing your mouth can also keep you from swallowing any part of your tooth that may be in your mouth.

Stop the Bleeding

If you are bleeding excessively, it’s best to call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room, but if the bleeding is manageable, control it by using a towel or gauze to apply pressure to the area.

Preserve the Tooth

If possible, try to locate your broken tooth. If your entire tooth has been knocked out, your dentist may be able to save it if you act quickly. Rinse it off and then place it in a glass of milk until you can get to your dentist’s office.

Relieve Your Pain

You can place a cold compress on your face to help with the pain and swelling. Another option is to take over-the-counter pain NSAID pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or naproxen.
